How to preserve your silk lingerie?

17 April 2024

Produced by the mulberry silkworm, silk is a noble material in many ways: soft, shiny, elegant… Used pure or blended with merino wool or precious cotton, it has the advantage of being thermoregulating, hypoallergenic and light: a precious asset when it comes to beautiful lingerie.

Delicate and luxurious, silk lingerie can nevertheless seem a little intimidating if you don’t know how to look after it. Its fluid, natural-fibre material means you need to take good care of it to keep it looking as good as new.

Precious pieces for an exceptional moment

Because a garment you love is a garment you take good care of, it is strongly recommended not to wear your silk night or daywear for several days in a row. This applies to all types of lingerie, of course, but even more so to models made from this delicate material.
Body heat and perspiration have an effect on the knitwear, which needs a rest between wearings. So alternate between several pieces, and remember to hang them up in a dry place away from light to avoid distorting the fabric.

Hand wash your silk lingerie

Dry-cleaning is not necessary, but machine washing is far from ideal. Instead, hand wash in lukewarm water (not above 28°, as hot water can stain silk) and even with a mild soap. Experts often recommend baby shampoos!

When it comes to frequency, there’s no such thing as too much, or your lingerie will wear out prematurely. Rinse thoroughly in cold water and add a little white vinegar if necessary to intensify the colours. Finally, take care not to rub too hard, and above all don’t wring out your lingerie to wring it out.

Drying: patience is a virtue

Silk lingerie should never be tumble-dried. Although it can occasionally withstand the delicate cycle of the washing machine, tumble-drying damages silk and deteriorates fine lace.

We recommendwrapping your freshly washed lingerie in a dry towel to absorb excess water. Then lay it flat or hang it on a hanger (except for negligees, which risk becoming distorted) away from light to dry naturally.

The utmost care for the most beautiful lingerie

Unfortunately, silk lingerie can crease. If this happens, you’ll need to iron it, but be very careful, as accidents can happen very quickly. Never use a steam iron, otherwise your beautiful lingerie will be full of holes. Put your iron on the lowest setting and keep your attention on what you are doing to avoid any mishaps.
